2019

In contrast to 2018, I took a number of long trips in 2019, including international trips both north and south of the border. Early in the year, I flew into Mexico for the first time. During the summer, I visited Churchill, Manitoba. I logged a hefty 213 hours for the year.

Offshore Encinitas, CA, January 2019
A beautiful nearly 360 degree rainbow!

MMLT Loreto, BCS, MEX, February 2019
I joined the Baja Bush Pilots Whales 2019 trip to Loreto and Adolfo Lopez Mateos. It was my first time flying in Mexico, and the BBP helped streamline all the bureaucracy involved with flying there. We stayed at the La Mision in Loreto, and flew a day trip to the grey whale sanctuary on the other side of the peninsula.

KMHV Mojave, CA, February 2019
This photo earned me a call from the FAA. Apparently, airport officals came across it and thought I had illegally operated a drone or violated the TFR for the Space Ship Two test flight. Of course, neither was the case, and a short conversation with the FAA inspector straightened everything out.

Over Temescal Valley, CA, March 2019
After plentiful rains during the winter, the area around Lake Elsinore erupted in a super-bloom. It looked like someone dumped fluorescent paint on the hills.

Over Laughlin, NV, May 2019
This year, the Hayward Air Rally made a return to Laughlin, last visited by the rally in 2006 before I was a participant.

48Y Pinecreek Border Airport, MN, June 2019
On my way to Churchill, I cleared Canadian customs at this little airfield that straddles the US-Canada border.

CYYQ Churchill, MB, CAN, July 2019
Churchill, polar bear capital of the world. I was a bit too early in the season to see them, but kayaked with the beluga whales instead.

Read more about my Churchill trip.

CYSM Fort Smith, NT, CAN, July 2019
Just outside of town, Wood Buffalo National Park is the summer home of the Whooping Crane. It's rare to see them from the accessible portions of the park though, and I failed to find any both on the ground and during a flyover of the park.

CFM4 Donnelly, AB, CAN, July 2019
An unplanned stop at a small agricultural strip due to rain, low ceilings, and low visibility.

KPGA Page, AZ, September 2019
On the way home from a visit to the Grand Tetons, I stopped for a couple days in Page. Among the nearby attractions: Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and the Vermilion Cliffs.

KBOI Boise, ID, October 2019
I took a friend to visit The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise. Their Fall Flights program is one of the few in the country where you can see trained raptors fly free outdoors, literally inches over your head.

KTFP McCampbell Porter Airport, Ingleside, TX, December 2019
Having failed to see the Whooping Cranes at their summer home, I sought them at their overwintering grounds at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The 610 nautical mile flight from Truth or Consequences (TCS) took only 3h38m, helped by strong tailwinds that led to groundspeeds in excess of 200 kts!

Over Boca Chica, TX, December 2019
The SpaceX facilities at Boca Chica. The shiny Starhopper and Starship prototypes are both visible.

Over Johnson Space Center, TX, December 2019
I couldn't fly around Texas without a visit to the Johnson Space Center. While I parked at the FBO at Pearland Regional (KLVJ), I took the opportunity to fly over the Johnson Space Center and do a landing at Ellington Field (KEFD).

TS36 Silver Wings Airport, Fredericksburg, TX, December 2019
Home of Fletchair maintenance for the Grumman fleet.
